Readers Q&A
Each month in the e-Letter, we feature a question posed by a Fitness Management reader in the Readers Q&A section on the website. In the Readers Q&A, you can add your response to questions that have been submitted or post your own question. It's all online: fitnessmanagement.com/readers.
QUESTION: Group Exercise Profit and Loss
Is there a way to figure out how many participants it takes to make/lose money in a group exercise class? We pay our instructors $10 per class, and we average four to eight participants for each class.
— Kyle
ANSWERS
I don't know how many members your facility has, but four participants in a class seems low. Calculate how many members you have total in your facility when you have classes going on (say, for a few hours in the morning, and a few in the evening). For example, 100 members total. Then, figure out the percentage of those members in a class. Say, 10. So, 10 percent of your in-club membership is taking a class at that time. You may also want to figure out your revenue per total members. Say 300 members paid dues that month, and 50 members total participated in classes (make sure you don't duplicate members who take more than one class). Does this number justify your expenses of paying instructors, keeping the room clean and air conditioned, etc.?
— Maggie
Rising expenses means more revenue is needed from the group fitness room. Think outside the box. First, target a need like Type 2 diabetes. Make a program around that, which includes a specialized group exercise class, an anti-type-2 diabetic diet plan, club membership, a book on how to beat type 2 diabetes, cooking demonstrations, food shopping tours, etc. Choose a time to run it (i.e., three months). Choose a price that gives $1,000 profit after all expenses. Deliver concrete results and make a profit margin you deserve.

The Fitness Management Blog
From "Compensation vs. Recognition" (July 14):
Monday was the official deadline for entries to the 15th annual Nova7 Facility Awards competition. While, each year, the number of entries rises and declines, due to a variety of factors, I sometimes wonder if facility operators really recognize the importance of this type of award for their facility's employees.
